ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Biotechnology at St. Bede’s College, Shimla was established in the year 2009 under the affiliation of Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. Since its inception, the department emphasizes on educating students so that they excel in both practical as well as theoretical aspects of biotechnology so that they can carve this discipline into a premier precision tool of the future for creation of wealth and ensuring social justice- specially for the welfare of poor. With highly qualified faculty and excellent infrastructure, the department is diligently involved in teaching and research activities. Students are encouraged to participate in scientific activities not only as a component of their prescribed studies but also as a mutual contribution for the college and society.
VISION
To promote good quality education in different disciplines of biotechnology so as to produce competent biotechnologists who can immensely sway the existing prototypes of agriculture, medicine, food, industry and environment thereby providing a sustainable and bio-economic edge to the present society.
MISSION
To inculcate a grit of innovation and virtuosity in young minds with substantial research aptitude.

- Computer systems with Internet facility.
- Departments own Library has several books of the various disciplines of Biotechnology and Microbiology of both foreign authors as well as Indian authors.
- Modern laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment’s such as autoclave, microscopes, spectrophotometer, incubator, thermo cycler, BOD incubator, centrifuge, gel doc, trans illuminator, deep freezer etc.
SYLLABUS
TEACHING –LEARNING
The Department of Biotechnology has a sturdy and dynamic curriculum with well-designed practical classes that fortify the theoretical concepts. Blended teaching practices including group discussions, brain storming, power point presentations, ICT learning, demonstrative lectures, smartboards, guest lectures, assignments etc. are used to make the teaching learning process pleasant. The B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology program provides a firm basis for much of the advanced thinking in the biotechnology discipline. Students are vitalized to perform practicals independently which instils experimentation flair in the early learning process. Students of the department imbibe various DNA and protein based molecular biology techniques, bioinformatics, immunology, biochemistry, biochemical engineering, basic genetic engineering techniques and various techniques in cell biology. The In-house projects conducted within the department, helps students to acquire a research aptitude and hands-on research skills. Entrepreneurships and industrial visits give students a greater understanding of the discipline.

Department of Biotechnology constantly motivates students for higher academic excellence and pursuits. Number of students from the department are pursuing Masters at various State Universities and Central Research Institutes in India.
- Ms. Shruti Gupta secured 3rd Position in Merit list of HP University for B.Sc Biotechnology (Hons) exams for batch (2009-2012).
- Ms. Aishwarya Singh Parmar of B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology (batch 2012-2015) cleared JNU-DBT entrance exam, for M.Sc Biotechnology.
- Ms. Priya Negi of B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology (batch 2012-2015) is working as a Food Security Officer in HP Govt. Food & Civil Supplies Dept.
- Ms. Rohani Negi of B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology (batch 2012-2015) has cleared CSIR-NET 2020.
- Ms. Shagun Bhatia and Ms. Manseerat Kaur of B.Sc (Hons) Biotechnology batch (2016-2018) received Laptops for their meritorious performance in University exams
- Apoorva Sood, Priya Sharma and Ushmita Thakur of B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology (batch 2016-2019) got selected in M.Sc Biotechnology Program conducted by JNU, New Delhi in 2019. They are pursuing M.Sc Biotechnology from HPU, Shimla.
- Ms. Nikita Chakraborty of B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology (batch 2016-2019) secured 1st position in entrance exam of Kalyani University, West Bengal in 2019 and is pursuing M.Sc in Genomic Science.
- Alefia Jaret of B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology (batch 2017-2020) got selected in entrance exam for admission to DBT-RCB (Faridabad), 2020. She is pursuing M.Sc Biotechnology at HPU, Shimla.
- Sonal Sharma of B.Sc. (Hons.) Biotechnology (batch 2017-2020) got selected for admission in M.Sc (Microbial Biotechnology) at Panjab University, Chandigarh, 2020.
STUDENT PROGRESSION
Student Evaluation
Students are evaluated on the basis of their class tests, assignments, presentations and project work. The record of the students are maintained on hard copies as well as on campus care.
Student performance and learning outcomes:
Students of the department have qualified various entrance examinations scoring top positions and have got admission in prestigious research institutes such as CRI, Kasauli; HP University; Punjab University.
